School Shooting Absences~The New Norm?
It is with a heavy heart I am writing this blog today. I do not pretend to know the answers I’m not sure there are any. Nor do I want this conversation to get political. I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, that is what makes the world go ’round. The only thing I think we can do is hug our babies because, “what if…”
My oldest daughter is staying home from school today due to a threat made to her High School Campus. The details were very vague on our phone blast, the only detail being mentioned was “due to a threat made on social media.” And that the threat was “unsubstantiated.” None the less the majority of the parents I know chose to keep their kids home today. Because in the back of your mind there is always that question of “what if?”
I applaud the way the school handled the threat. Parents were immediately notified and police are on campus today as well as school police. That’s not the problem. The problem is that my child is quite possibly getting used to all of this violence . Active shooter drills, Police on campus, Social Media Threats, the random violence that seems to be everywhere.
This isn’t the first time this has happened. About a year ago the same daughter’s campus received a similar threat on Social Media. And again she stayed home from school that day, because again…”what if.”
So if this time table stays true to form, which I think it will. My children will have a threat made to them once a year until they graduate high school possibly college. And I say them, because in reality the campus isn’t being threatened our children’s lives are being personally threatened.
Let’s put this into perspective. Can you imagine if someone sent YOU a death threat every single year for the next decade, possibly more!…How would that make you feel? Would you become desensitized or angry? Is this our new status quo?
